A CLEAN BOOT

~ Pete Bishal ~

How WE cleanly shut-down our computer (using Windows 98 128-bit, Internet Explorer Version 5.50.4522.1800, and Fixit... a Windows diagnostic program, with Eudora as our Mail program)... NOTE: Not everyone has what we have, but much of the following can be applied to ANY system.)

(One time only!) Right click a blank area on your Desktop and create a folder.. we call ours "Shutdown" When done, open this folder and add in the following shortcuts:

  1. C:\WINDOWS\History
  2. C:\WINDOWS\Cookies
  3. C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
  4. Make yourself a Shortcut to the Recycle Bin. (Right click the bin, tell it to create Shortcut on Desktop, and then drag THAT shortcut into your new folder.
Note: We also have shortcuts to our FIXIT and its Fixit.log (which we delete whenever we run the program), Eudora's Attatchments, C:\Temp, and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (these so we can  dump-off unneeded or unwanted programs and attachments).. Okay?

Now, when ready to shutdown or reboot, do the following:

  1. Right Click the Taskbar  with the clock on it and you will see a list of options. Choose Properties and then the     Start-Menu-Programs tab. You will see a 'Documents Menu' Clear button. If not grayed out, click it to clear the list of  your latest views.
  2. IF YOU USE I.E., right click your shortcut to it and choose properties. In the middle of the window that pops-up, you'll see an option to "Delete Files" under "Temporary Internet Files" Click this and choose "Delete Files", checking "Delete Offline Files" before clicking 'Okay'. Then Click the 'Clear-History' Button followed by 'Okay'.

Now, you'd think all of the stuff is gone, right? Wrong! Open that folder you created and---

  1. Double Left click that History Shortcut you made.. See the little Calender (or CanenderS!!) for Today and maybe the last 3 years? Right Click it/them and tell your computer to Delete it or them all. (Don't worry... Windows will build you a new one on startup.)
  2. Now open your Shortcut to Cookies. Highlight all but the index (Windows won't let you delete that one) and hit your Delete key. After you hit Yes to confirm, they're gone for good.
  3. Finally, those Temporary Internet Files: Open the shortcut you made to them, highlight all, and hit your Delete key. All done.
  4. ooooops... Almost forgot : Right click your new Trash shortcut and empty same.

NOW reboot your clean system....
