Over Mintmarks and Hot Repunched
Mintmarks

Kevin Flynn and John Wexler

Retail Price: $33.95.
The primary purpose of this book is to list all Over Mintmarks
for all series, including a detailed description, die markers, and photographs
to make identification and distinguishing easy. Of the commonly collected
die varieties, overdates, overmintmarks, doubled dies, and repunched mintmarks,
over mintmarks are the rarest. OMMs are highly collectable and enjoy a
high premium. There are only approximately 48 known OMMs for all series.
Many of them occur during the same year. For example, thre are 6 different
1900O/CC Morgan Dollars, and 14 different 1955D/S Jefferson Nickels. Many
of these varieties look extremely similar. Using die markers makes identification
simple and easy. There are also several new OMMs listed in this book for
the first time.
Another focus of this book is dramatic repunched mintmarks. There are
literally thousands of repunched mintmarks, on some years such as 1960D
Lincoln cents, there are over 100 different RPMs known. The goal was to
show the hottest RPMs from all series. Several criteria were used in determining
which varieties were selected, these include how dramatic a variety is,
rarity, interest, and highly published varieties. For example, there are
only two known large over small mintmarks. In this sub-category, the working
dies were first struck with a mintmark used for a smaller denomination,
then struck again with a different mintmark. Both of these varieties are
highly sought after by collectors.
Another rare and highly collectable type of RPM are mintmarks over horizontal
or inverted mintmarks. There are only approximately 20 varieties in all
series for this sub-category. Some of these have been known for years,
others have been published without photographs up to now, still there are
others which are new and are published for the first time in this book.
A third sub-category of RPMs included in this book are misplaced mintmarks.
To be classified as a misplaced mintmark, the repunched mintmark must be
touching or protruding into a design element or the rim, or the mintmark
must be fully displaced from the normal mintmark. Collectors love dramatic
varieties, for RPMs, these are the kings. What is also enjoyable, is that
there are so many RPMs for all series, you are likely to find some RPMs
when searching for these dramatic ones or others to fill your collection.
A final category of RPMs included are those which are very dramatic,
but which are not fully displaced. These are included as they have a high
collector interest and usually a high premium.
Also included in this book are varieties which were classified as OMMs
which are refuted, this includeds the 1882O Morgan Dollars which were called
O/S varieties. These varieties are the result of a progressive die crack.
Many of these refuted OMMs have been doubted for years, but as there are
references which refer to these varieties as OMMs, they are included in
this book.
This book is only available in soft cover and retail list is $33.95.

"The
Official Price Guide to Mint Errors - 6th Edition"
by
Alan Herbert
"The Official Price Guide to Mint
Errors - 6th Edition" is a book that needs to be in your reference library.
While the title doesn't really fit the content, the content does fit the
collector. I have defined over 400 different classes of minting varieties,
separated into the three division catalog system that I devised in 1972,
which is used by nearly everyone in the hobby. The PDS cataloging system
is based on the planchet, die and striking divisions, which in turn are
divided into sections. These in turn are divided into classes. The definitions
are compatible with each other, making it much easier to find the specific
class that your coin falls into. I have been authenticating, photographing
and writing about minting varieties since 1967.
Besides the detailed explanations and numerous
pictures, I have devoted plenty of room to explain the minting process,
both when it is going according to plan and when malfunctions occur. I
have included a large glossary of hobby terms and acronyms, a chart of
coin weights, a section on Del Romines' mint stages and other useful
information. Wherever possible I have avoided using the slang and nicknames
that are the secret language of coin collecting, using technially correct
terms which can be readily defined and understood, both by the novice and
the experienced collector.
Published by Random House, the book costs $15.
You can order an autographed copy from me with a check on money order,
including an additional $3 for postage and handling to:

The
Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage
by
David and John Feigenbaum.
This softbound book is a wonderful reference
work for these very underrated series. Each date and Mint within
the particular denomination is shown in detail, with notations for scarcity,
comments, values and additional tips. There is one obverse and reverse
photo for each date of a series. Additional sections are included
for proof coins within the series, charts and graphs illustrating ranking
by MS grades, and more. This is an excellent reference for the Barber
coinage specialists, for dealers, and even for general
collectors.
The book is available in soft cover only, 8.5"
x 11" with the binding on the shorter side, and 144 pages.
The photos that are included are excellent. A foreword by Mark Salzberg,
President of NGC, is particularly interesting
and informative. The initially published retail (in 1999) was about
$40, and certainly worth every penny.
