A Cleaner Desktop

~ Pete Bishal ~

At the bottom of your desktop resides what is usually called the 'Taskbar.' On it, you'll see the Start button and any currently running programs, as well as some other features that are very useful. Let's discuss the Taskbar and how you can make your work/play a little easier using the power of this tool bar.

If you have several programs running at the same time, the Taskbar can get a bit crowded. You can expand the Taskbar and give it more room to hold information. To do this, go down to the very top
edge of the Taskbar until your mouse pointer turns into a double arrow. Now click and hold the left-mouse button and SLOWLY drag the mouse pointer up. When you're satisfied with the new Taskbar size, stop.

However, if you're like most Windows users, you want your desktop and/or programs to have access to as much of the screen as possible. The Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, however useful, takes up extra room -- especially if you have expanded it as described above.

Fortunately, you can actually "hide" the Taskbar. Doing so will allow the functions of the Taskbar to remain active, but the Taskbar itself will be hidden from your screen until you need it. To hide your taskbar, go to the bottom of the screen and find a 'blank' space on the Taskbar. Now, right-click on the Taskbar and a small menu will appear. Click Properties and a box will appear with several
options. Check the box labeled Auto Hide. Click Apply, then OK. Now the Taskbar will sink off the bottom of your screen. You can bring the Taskbar back by taking your mouse to the very bottom of the screen; when you do so, the Taskbar will once again rise from the deep!
