FAKE ERRORS!


 
You work hard. You save your money. You wait for the day that you can buy that glorious error coin that you have had your eye on for some time now. Did you know that there are people out there that work just as hard creating fakes to sucker you in and take your hard earned money? I am sure that you know that, but the question looms large: How do you tell a fake from a genuine coin? Well, to help answer that, our own Richerrors has kindly offered to display a group of altered coin photos from fake errors that he has encountered. Rich will also provide a narrative as to how you can tell that this coin is a fake and how it was produced. Also beware of Cracked in 1/2 coins or broken into a couple of pieces. This can be accomplished by placing a coin a block of dry ice over night, Then struck with a hammer, Planchet had become so frozen & brittle it will shatter.  While some broken in 2 planchets are real, they may have been faked, use caution are seek advice on these & other fakes from Error dealers & Authentication Companies. 

Tools of the trade, a good pocket scale in grams to take to a show, a  Good Ohaus Scale for Specific Gravity tests ( Metal composition), A good Magnifier  7x & 10X( Bausch & Lomb hastings Triplet) NOT a cheap Glass or plastic Magnifier , Plastic Calipers, Magnet.

1914-D 1c  altered from a 1944-D cent, #4 changed to a 1 #1a. Close up  of 1914-D date

1943 Copper 1c.. OR is it??  Copper plated steel cent made to look like famious $$ Cent.  Authentication - use a Magnet on coin, if it is magnetic! it's Steel NOT copper.

1985 1c with fake Straight Clip. This was snipped off, there is NO metal flow near the clip, Also Zinc edge is showing & it should be copper plated.

Lg Cent Staight Clip Fake, No metal flow near clip & sawing marks visable even though coin is worn.

1964 25c holed, made to look like a Qtr struck on a washer, Raised lip around hole from drilling visable, & No weak metal flow around hole, Hole perfectly round with no distortion.

1963 5c with War Nickel Mint Mark Fake- War nickels were made from 1942-1945 with raised Mint Mark. The fake here show an incuse "S" Mint Mark

3 Nickels Acid treated fakes- Done to make them look like Foreign planchets or Off Metals. Design is Fuzzy to look at, planchet is lighter & smaller

3 Cents Acid treated fakes-to appear to be struck on foreign Planchets, Planchets are smaller & lighter, design is fuzzy & unclear

Obv Clad Dime acid treated fake- to appear like Clad layer is coming off.  Rev of coin- fake missing Clad Layer by Acid bath- design is not  clear , Planchet weight is wrong

Fake Double denomination coin. received a 2nd imprint from another coin to appear to be a Double Denomination. 2nd imprint is incuse instead of raised

1958-D cent fake Double strike- very well done, except it was done with false dies. Notice there is NO Collar Marks or Rim on the 2nd strike!  Rev. of Dbl strike fake (1958-D)

Incased 1c fake- these were placed in Lucky coin holders, belt buckles, necklace bezels. which alters the outside rim of the coin.

Kennedy magian coin- two heads or tails, most currently confused as a Mule. these fakes are made, when a normal coin is machined out to be nothing more than a shell. then a 2nd identical coin is  milled down to fit within the 1st shell. The Fit can be almost perfect & undetectable - almost..  Check the rims carefully for a seam & also weigh

Magician coin 1946 1c on 1 side & a 1941 dime on other..  2 different dates or same date, still the same-Man made- see #15 Altered coin.

Three Mutilated 1c coins to look like an Error-  weak strike, dbl struck or indented -I think NOT!!

3 assorted Mutilated coins- All man made and sometimes confused as errors- This is where knowing the Mint process comes in handy..

2 fake Cent Off Metals- Plated to look like a Clad or Silver Wheat cent, like they were struck on Dime Planchets.  Once Again weight if off, diameter of planchet is off. One was even placed in a Necklace Bezel to be worn as an ornament.

Seated Liberty Quarter on Dime Planchet FAKE- Cut down to look like it was struck on a Dime Planchet or foreign planchet. weight is off & edges are not right, they have burrs & cutting marks.
